They amount to over 25 billion euros total revenues of Italian pharmacies, for a average expenditure of 407 euros per inhabitant: but what are the peculiarities of this sector?
The answer is an in-depth study conducted by Leanus, a company specialized in economic and financial analysis solutions, in collaboration with Milano Finanza, on the accounting performance of Italian pharmacies, analyzing their peculiarities and researching the factors that determine their success.
Of the almost 17 thousand pharmacies (data provided by the Business Register and updated to January 2025), only 21% are joint stock companies. Leanus has analyzed in detail 2.450 2023 financial statements to evaluate their economic, financial and equity profile to identify any drivers capable of explaining the best performances.
In addition to the Regional Rankings and the list of the Top 100 best companies by EBITDA, size, reliability, Leanus has developed the ranking of the Top 10 best Italian pharmacies.
Aggregate data. The average expenditure of 407 euros depends on various factors, such as the type of products purchased (drugs, over-the-counter drugs, supplements, etc.) and the method of access to the health system (prescriptions or private purchases). Naturally, this figure can vary based on the region, age groups and health conditions of the population. On average, there is one pharmacy for every 3.470 inhabitants and/or 18 square kilometers of territory.
On average, the margin on products (added value on consumption) is around 30-35%. The sector occupies approximately 60 thousand people, the cost of which impacts revenues by approximately 13,7%. EBITDA varies significantly (from 2% to 15% on average) and highlights the effects of different management skills and the ability to govern the factors that determine commercial success.The average debt of pharmacies is almost negligible.(…)
